The Whole Skinny After the birth of my first son in December of 2005, I began to look for healthier alternatives to the chemical-laden household cleaners I had been using. Faint recollections of information from an environmental studies course ten years prior, plus a hint of mothers’ intuition had me putting off several cleaning tasks that loomed over my shoulders at the time. I suppose reading the labels on my cleaners had something to do with it as well, but I could not bring myself to spray substances like ammonia, chlorine, aerosols, or heavy mold and mildew removers around my brand-new little baby. By now, I had my head buried in research of all things healthy and green for the benefit of my son, and was on a mission to share this knowledge with anyone who would listen. I became convinced that so many things we have been conditioned to consume without question - things we take for granted and assume are safe - are simply not necessary in our children’s lives; things like toxic plasticizers in their toys and feeding items, pesticide residues in their food, clothing, and linens, synthetic preservatives and harsh chemicals in their bath and body products. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. A few months later I received an invitation to a cousin’s baby shower. I knew exactly what I wanted to give her – a little basket of healthy alternatives to some of the most common nursery necessities a new mother would need. While I had pages and pages of companies, on-line stores, and manufacturers of healthy and organic goods for children saved in my browser, I did not find one place that brought it all together with a price tag I could afford.
